Sanatorium du Basil

In the Belgian Ardennes there is a massive old building. This building is a
sanatorium and is better known as Sanatorium Du Basil in the urbex world. The building was built around 1900 and in 1903 it opened its doors and welcomed the first patients.

The location of the building wasn’t chosen randomly. The clean air, peacefull enviroment and great climate in the wooded hills was great for the tubuculosepatients to heal. Also the main building was curved and pointed to the south. This was done so that the patients could enjoy the sunshine to the fullest as it had a positive effect on the treathment. The main building is symetrical with a little clock tower on top of it as the center point of the building. The west side of the building housed the medical department. The building also had a kitchen and canteen, which were located at the first floor. All the laundry and boiler rooms where located on the ground level.

After being a recovery home for tuberculosepatiens for many years, the building became a psychiatric ward. After that it became an asylum center till 2013. In 2013 the building closed because the massive opperating costs to keep it running. Since then the building is for sale for around €3.000.000,-.

As you can see on the pictures of our visit, it isn’t worth that by a long shot anymore. Everything has decayed till a point of no return. The building is litterly left to decay for many years till it will be either demolished or till it will collapse on its own.

Entry is very easy with nothing close to the building. As you can see on the pictures, the doors are open and you could walk straight in and walk trought the whole building, or at least whats left of it.
